Worship in the park at Point Cook

With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions over the past month, it’s been encouraging to hear various stories of how our BUV churches are re-opening for in-person worship gatherings and ways they are managing the existing restrictions. One such church is Point Cook Community Baptist Church situated in the outer west of Melbourne. The church describes itself as a small informal bunch of people with a huge heart, committed to loving each other and those around them. Pastor David van Wynen recently shared where they are up to with their re-opening.

The church community resumed in-person services during October, in a local park – Featherbrook Reserve, Point Cook, when easing of restrictions allowed meetings of 5 people. These worship gatherings were recorded and posted to their YouTube channel for those unable to attend the live services. Like many churches this year, Point Cook has found that their online presence right throughout COVID has allowed new people to connect with them, both from their local community area and beyond.

The congregation will continue to use the park into the new year as their regular venue is not suitable under current COVID guidelines. Those attending are encouraged to BYO chairs or blanket, bible, water bottle and sunscreen and observe the usual COVID safe guidelines.  Encouragingly, the local city council has been supportive of the church meeting in the park, even providing them with signs to use while Sunday services are being conducted.

David shares “using the park and online services has been a blessing, as it has continued to create a community presence for us in Point Cook, aligning to our vision of deepening our community engagement.  We are excited, that early in the new year we will be holding a baptism service, probably at the beach.  God is doing great things with our little church here at Point Cook, as we continue to engage in new ways to serve our local community”
