When most of us think about a church’s financial health, we naturally turn to the numbers — budgets, cash flow, giving trends, reserves. And rightly so. These things matter deeply.
But here’s something worth reflecting on: what if one of your church’s greatest assets isn’t showing up on any spreadsheet?
We’re talking about wisdom — and there’s an abundance of it already present within your community.
The people around you carry something precious
Consider the people in your church. The retired pastor who has walked through many seasons of ministry. The treasurer who faithfully stewarded the finances for two decades. The elder who has prayed your community through its most difficult moments. That depth of experience is genuinely difficult to replace.
When you’re navigating a complex decision or seeking clarity on the road ahead, having someone alongside you who has been there before is not just helpful — it is a true gift. These seasoned leaders offer:
- Grounded perspective when decisions feel overwhelming
- Honest, caring counsel when discernment is needed
- Accountability rooted in genuine love and care
- Prayer support and generational wisdom that only comes with faithful service
Relational capital — more valuable than we often realise
If wisdom is a form of wealth, then community is the system that circulates it. The stronger your relationships, the more freely that wisdom flows. Two simple ways to cultivate this:
- Learn names. Five new names this month is a small step that builds a genuine culture of belonging.
- Invest in small groups. This is where meaningful conversations happen, where questions get asked freely, and where future leaders begin to emerge.
What are we really saying?
Steward your finances well, as you always have — but also steward the wisdom within your people. Create spaces where experienced voices are welcomed and where a lifetime of faithful service is honoured as the gift it truly is. Churches that tend to both their budgets and their relationships are the ones that continue to flourish.
