Read, Pray, Obey

Faith Reflections by Doreen Tang

I thought I had my spiritual routine down pat: coffee, quiet time, work. Then my mentor suggested I go deeper in my walk with God.

That’s when I realised we all need PTs. Not just Personal Trainers for our bodies, but Prayer Trainers for our souls. Left on our own, most of us would happily set the spiritual treadmill to “comfortable stroll” and call it a workout.

When my alarm rang on Day One, my first thought was simple: coffee (though I managed to spill the pods before my first sip). As the days went on, some mornings felt rich, many felt ordinary. I discovered spiritual growth was less about dramatic breakthroughs and more about simply showing up.

Looking back, my mentor wasn’t asking me to do more for God, he was inviting me to spend more time with God.

What began as an experiment became a reminder that Christian life is often shaped by simple acts of obedience. God rarely asks us to do something spectacular. More often, He invites us to take the next step: open His Word, spend time in prayer, listen, trust and obey. Noah built the ark before the rain, Peter stepped out before he knew the water could hold him.

For me, that next step involved a 5:30am alarm. For you, it may look completely different.

The deeper walk I was searching for wasn’t found in a spiritual breakthrough, but in saying “yes” to God in the ordinary moments.

Read a little deeper. Pray a little longer. Obey a little quicker.

Reflection: Where might God be inviting you to take a simple step of obedience today?
