Friendly Community and a Baptism at Easter Service

On Resurrection Sunday, over 100 locals and visitors woke up bright and early to attend the Phillip Island and San Remo Inter Church Council (ICC) annual Dawn Service at the Cowes Foreshore, which was led this year by Phillip Island Baptist Church. The beautiful sunrise service, which included worship, bible readings, communion, was followed by a water baptism in the beach that was conducted by the local Anglican minister.

“Having the dawn service in the public domain, although most of Phillip Island was still asleep, helps in the ongoing unified work of the local churches to be both present and active with the community,” said Phillip Island Baptist Church Senior Pastor Simon Schwartz. “On Phillip Island, there is generally a positive sense from the local community towards the various churches. A number of the local churches have regular activities such as markets or events that might coincide with festivals, all of which promote community engagement. The level of engagement is such that I think it would be very noticeable for the community if the churches suddenly were to disappear. With this positive community attitude comes a sense of trust and goodwill towards the church which makes it easier for people to be willing to accept invitations and come along to a church event, or ministry. This promotes an environment where anyone can join in, which is particularly beneficial for those who might be on the fringes or are exploring Christianity and seeking a sense of belonging.”

Representatives from the 6 churches located across Phillip Island and San Remo make up the Inter Church Council, whose goal is to embrace opportunities where the churches can work together in the public sphere to be a united presence that benefits not just those of the Christian faith, but also the broader community.

“Each year the various churches take it in turns to lead the Resurrection Sunday dawn service. This year it was our (Baptists’) turn. What I appreciate about the ICC is that members from the other churches help out as they are able and attend to show support. This shows the local community that the churches on Phillip Island get along, respect each other and are on the same team – we are not in some sort of competition with each other. It also provides an opportunity for people from the different churches to worship together and have fellowship with one another.”

“If you happen to be on Phillip Island over Easter next year, why not come along to the Resurrection Dawn Service and join us as we celebrate our risen King?”
