Nine people, aged 13 to 60 were baptised at Waverley Baptist Church in April, bringing much joy and celebration as they publicly committed their lives to follow Christ.
During the service, each person shared their testimonies, encouraging others to express interest in being baptised soon. Associate Pastor Marcel said it was “so good” to hear the different stories of how God had brought each person to this point through the work of the Holy Spirit and the faithful discipleship of others.
Some had grown up in the church and always believed in God but had reached the point where faith became a personal commitment rather than simply their parents’ belief. Another person grew up in a Buddhist family, later became an atheist, but during a difficult season in life began questioning beliefs and ultimately found Christ.
Others were inspired to consider baptism after seeing friends or relatives baptised and hearing their testimonies. Some said sermons on discipleship convicted them that baptism was an important step of obedience for followers of Christ.
A number admitted they had delayed baptism because of its public nature but were reminded through Scripture that Jesus calls us to make disciples and baptise them. The Holy Spirit used this to draw them toward making a public declaration of faith.
To further encourage those being baptised, congregation members shared Bible verses and words of encouragement with them. Each candidate also received a video of the service as a reminder of the day and the messages shared.
Marcel said “Waverley Baptist’s churchwide discipleship focus includes fellowship, prayer meetings, Sunday gatherings, mentoring, life groups and ministry groups to support ongoing spiritual growth.
As a church this was a super-encouraging day and we celebrated like crazy! It is just pure joy that is hard to put into words. Around five of the people were 25 and under, and the church was really encouraged by the fact that young people are giving their lives to Jesus.”
