Warrnambool & District Baptist Church and Naringal Baptist Church have launched a new monthly night service with a special focus on high school-aged young people in Victoria’s south-west.
The first service was held in July with around 100 people attending – including several from Portland, an hour away. “It was fantastic to see so many young people, with many inviting their friends. One person even invited his whole class, and it was great to see about half of them turn up,” said Warrnambool’s Senior Pastor, Rev Paul Pallot. “We’re looking forward to seeing how our young people become involved in worship and ministry opportunities in this service and make it their own.”
Paul said the churches had noticed a gap in church services of this style aimed at high school students in the area. “Our churches have many ministries for younger children and the young adults, and we felt we could do more for our high schoolers. We didn’t want them to be forgotten! We’ve found in the past that the format of an evening service that is pitched to youth has been a sustainable option that really provides new ways for young people to grow in their faith, encourages them and gives them new ways to serve.”
The night kicked off with hot chocolates as people arrived, followed by a game and a time of worship and teaching centred around the Prodigal Son. Several young people contributed through the music, the bible reading and Mal Ward’s interactive message. Snacks were served, and everyone stayed for over an hour to chat or play games like pickleball. “Feedback so far has been very positive, with people happy about the way the first service came together. Follow-up will happen organically – we’ll check in with our young people about what they thought, what they learned and whether they want to ask any questions about the teaching.”
The two churches have worked together on other events recently, such as an annual camp along with Hamilton, Portland and Port Campbell Baptist Churches. Paul said the collaboration had been a wonderful encouragement. “We already have some great collegiality between our churches. We all get along well, and people are always suggesting new ways that we could work together! It’s early days for the new youth service but it feels like it has some good structure and momentum already.”
