A simple website enquiry in July opened the door to an unforgettable ministry moment at Baptist Camping Victoria. The Watoto Children’s Choir, known worldwide for their vibrant music and testimony of God’s goodness, were searching for a place to call home as they arrived from Uganda and prepared to launch their 2025 Australian tour.
Although the request didn’t fit our usual model, our staff felt led to explore how we might support the group. Many of us had seen their choirs perform in years gone by, and some of our staff and families had even hosted choir members before. For Linda, one of BCV’s Bookings Administrator, the connection was deeply personal: her 90-year-old mother has sponsored Watoto children for decades and once met her sponsor child, Fred, at a Frankston performance.
Through creativity and generosity, our staff found ways to make it work. Anglesea Camps Manager, Dale, worked with the group to understand their needs, and our staff gladly volunteered time to host the choir.
When the choir arrived straight from Uganda on 1 September at 11pm, our Anglesea team was ready to welcome them. What followed was a week overflowing with encouragement and joy. Each morning, the children’s joyful songs of thanks filled the dining hall at breakfast. Staff had the privilege of experiencing a full rehearsal in Burnside Hall, where powerful voices lifted the space in praise. The choir also enjoyed a visit to Camp Wilkin and delighted in spotting kangaroos for the first time.
Before departing on their three-month tour, the choir gathered around the campfire with our staff for prayer. Children prayed for their carers. Carers prayed for their children. And, together we experienced the love of God in action.
Hosting the Watoto Choir reminded us that Christian camping is more than programs and activities. It is about embodying the gospel in everyday ways — creating safe, welcoming spaces where ministry can flourish. As one staff member reflected, “The choir staff and children were a joy to have onsite. Each one carried a powerful testimony of God’s goodness in the midst of challenge.”
We give thanks for this extraordinary partnership, and we continue to pray that Watoto’s time in Australia will be filled with life-changing encounters, powerful worship, and encouragement for all who hear their stories.
